Wave open source next steps: "Wave in a Box"

Since the announcement that we will discontinue development of Google Wave as a standalone product, many people have asked us about the future of the open source code and Wave federation protocol. After spending some time on figuring out our next steps, we'd like to share the plan for our contributions over the coming months.
We will expand upon the 200K lines of code we've already open sourced (detailed at waveprotocol.org) to flesh out the existing example Wave server and web client into a more complete application or "Wave in a Box."
This project will include:
an application bundle including a server and web client supporting real-time collaboration using the same structured conversations as the Google Wave system
a fast and fully-featured wave panel in the web client with complete support for threaded conversations
a persistent wave store and search implementation for the server (building on contributed patches to implement a MongoDB store)
refinements to the client-server protocols
gadget, robot and data API support
support for importing wave data from wave.google.com
the ability to federate across other Wave in a Box instances, with some additional configuration
This project will not have the full functionality of Google Wave as you know it today. However, we intend to give developers and enterprising users an opportunity to run wave servers and host waves on their own hardware.
Since the beginning, it has been our vision that the Google Wave protocols could support a new generation of communication and collaboration tools. The response from the developer community to date has been amazing and rewarding. Even more so now, we believe that developers and other projects are a critical part of this story.
While Wave in a Box will be a functional application, the future of Wave will be defined by your contributions. We hope this project will help the Wave developer community continue to grow and evolve. We'll discuss more technical details of our plan on the Wave Protocol Forum, which is the best place to keep up with the latest progress on the open source project and learn how you can contribute.

How Will Facebook Make Money?

Filed Under: Labels:
For many people, Facebook is the first stop in any Web surfing session. It has developed into a highly engaging combination of online bulletin board, personal scrapbook, and group communication network. But did you ever wonder why, being all those things, Facebook is free?
Well, it really isn’t. Facebook offers its service in exchange for the right to capture and collect mountains of demographic and preference data from its users (you mean they didn't tell you that when you signed up?). That data can be extremely valuable to marketers and advertisers because it is highly detailed and personal.
Many Facebook observers believe that the company hopes eventually to license parts of its “social graph,” or profile information database, to external marketers and advertisers who might use it to target ads or other content to potential customers. But to be useful to marketers, the user data must be set to "public," and Facebook has come under intense scrutiny over its handling of the privacy of its users' data of late. In light of the current backlash, any quick moves by Facebook to monetize its user data could prove disastrous.
What will Facebook do?

Low-Hanging Fruit: Facebook's Business Today

Today, Facebook is mainly an advertising platform. It sells ad space on its site, and it helps its advertisers aim their ads at specific groups of Facebook users, based on elements of its members’ profile data. Facebook also takes in a small amount of money through revenue-sharing agreements with developers who offer apps on Facebook: Facebook hands over a certain amount of “public” profile data to the app makers, enabling them to personalize the experience of the app's end users.
And that’s it.
Some observers, such as Tom Phillips, CEO of social marketing companyMedia6Degrees, believe that Facebook's userbase is so massive, and its database of user data is so rich, that it can do good business simply by selling ad space and by hosting apps on its own platform. “With the amount of volume they have, they only have to do simple things,” Phillips says. “They can make enough money selling big marketers volume impressions online, by running ads at their own site based not on keywords but on the actual tastes and preferences of Facebook users.”
To be sure, Facebook has focused on increasing its membership, and it has been wildly successful on that score: the number of Facebook accounts is now nearing 500 million. So the sheer size of the Facebook audience is attractive to advertisers and app makers; and as a bonus, Facebook provides data tools to advertisers that help them make meaningful impressions on members of that audience.
But the company is deeply indebted to its venture capital backers, who, while already seeing dividends from Facebook’s current business, are looking forward to a big payday (investment plus return) at some visible point in the future. For now, Facebook's investors are giving Zuckerberg and company plenty of time. People familiar with the situation say that you won't see a Facebook IPO this year or next year, but you probably will see one in 2012.
Still, Facebook has already taken some bold steps in that direction, periodically marching out new features to capture more user data for its massive "social graph"--and trying to make as much of that data “public” as possible. That public data is what marketers use to ensure that they are knocking on the right doors (websites) with the right marketing messages (ads, usually) to sell products. But those same bold moveshave earned it the ire of many critics concerned about the privacy of user data.
So the interesting question isn't "How does Facebook make money right now?" but "How does Facebook intend to leverage its massive store of data to achieve full profit-making potential over the next two years?"

Stay the Course?

For the most part, Facebook has restricted its business partners to using the data it provides to approach users within Facebook. For example, Facebook gives onsite advertisers and app developers the advantage of its user data to help them target ads and customize the content in apps. Facebook does not directly charge those partners for the privilege, however. That could change.
According to Harvard Business School professor Ben Edelman, Facebook could stick with its current money-making model, but start charging for things that it does for free now. “Facebook may be using the old crack dealer model--the first puff is free,” Edelman says. After app developers and partner Websites get ‘hooked,’ Facebook could start charging for access to its user data, he says.
Edelman believes that many of Facebook’s current business partners would be happy to pay. “If American Airlines can afford to spend $100,000 to somebody to design their page, I imagine that they could afford to pay $10,000 a year to Facebook itself,” Edelman says.

Sitting on a Gold Mine?

To marketers, the Facebook data is potentially more valuable than the data collected by other massively popular sites, like Google. That’s because Facebook collects a rich set of personally identifiable information (PII) from its user profiles. The data contains not only the user’s demographic data, but also data about their online and offline likes and dislikes--and those of their friends. The personal and social detail of Facebook’s data could give marketers unprecedented power to find new customers.
A Facebook profile may contain your age, sex and location information. It might also know that you are an avid runner who attended a wine-tasting party last Tuesday night. It might even know for example, that you recently visited the Websites of MSNBC.com and MoveOn.org. A marketer such as Coca-Cola or Saturn or Nike, could compare this combination of demographic and preference data, and determine your similarity to people who have already bought their products.
But there's more. Facebook also collects and makes "public" the list of people who are your Facebook friends. If a marketer is looking to reach people who have a good chance of going out and buying their product, they might naturally want to focus on people whose friends have already purchased that product, explains Tom Phillips of Media6Degrees.
That sort of “social marketing” is a much more fine-grained and effective way of targeting potential customers than relying on the traditional demographics approach (for example, "42-year-old men in Montana often buy Ford trucks"). The tastes and buying habits of your circle of friends, in other words, are much better predictors of what you are likely to buy, than are your age, sex, and location data.
Phillips's company has made a business of finding (and scoring) similarities in the social data of different groups of people, yielding a "social graph" of preferences. Phillips says that one of his company's clients might provide Media6Degrees with a list of its customers, and then ask Media6Degrees to find people with similar social graphs from within its database of roughly 20 million people, the assumption being that similar people with similar tastes are likely to buy similar things--that they share a "common brand affinity."
But some Web marketers, including Media6Degrees, are steering clear of Facebook user data, fearing that using it could sweep them into the center of the current privacy firestorm alongside Facebook itself. Though Media6Degree's success depends entirely on the breadth and depth of its database of (social) people, Phillips says that his company has no interest in adding Facebook's data to its current collection. Why? Because Facebook's massive database is full of PII, and the stigma associated with such data is so great right now that Media6Degrees might face a privacy backlash of its own if it added some of that content to its database.

Anonymous Social Marketing?

Critics have long suspected Facebook of harboring plans to sell or license big chunks of its social graph to large Web marketers, but to date, the company has not done so. Will it? Most observers think so. “I don’t think Facebook can get to where they want to be without doing that,” Harvard’s Edelman says. Facebook’s central challenge is to figure out a way to make money from its user data without further inflaming consumers, advocacy groups, and government bodies such as Congress and the FTC.
Eric Wheeler, CEO of 33Across, another Web marketing firm, says that his company routinely licenses user data from blog sites, social media sites, and app developers, but doesn't collect the actual IP addresses, names, or e-mail addresses from those sites. “There is no PII; We don’t need it, so none of that ever touches our system,” Wheeler says. Instead, 33Across uses cookies. A company like Sprint (a 33Across client) might provide 33Across with a list of its current customers, and then ask 33Across to track the online social interactions that those customers have with others. If 33Across determines that a particular contact might be likely to buy a Sprint product, the firm drops a cookie into the contact's browser so that a relevant Sprint ad can be served up there in the future.
Wheeler believes that Facebook, using its wealth of user data, could take a similar approach. Or Facebook could decouple its user data from its platform and license it to companies like 33Across (Wheeler says that he'd love to have access to Facebook's data) or directly to large marketers like Nike, but in an anonymized form that contains no personally identifiable information.

Watching and Waiting

At the moment, Facebook is closely watching the privacy backlash and the debate that has been raging since the company’s last privacy settings overhaul in late April. The public outcry has prompted talk in Washington, D.C., about the need for a social networking privacy bill, as well as a Federal Trade Commission investigation into the data management practices of Facebook and Google.
Though Facebook has a habit of bulling forward with new programs--and asking for forgiveness afterward rather than for permission in advance--the company is unlikely to try to license large chunks of PII from its database to marketers anytime soon. The air around Facebook and its data is so highly charged right now that Zuckerberg and company have good reason to move cautiously in the near term.
If Facebook users suddenly began receiving direct-marketing come-ons based on personal information harvested from their Facebook profiles, the result could be a user revolt, followed by class-action lawsuits, followed by government intervention.
So Facebook watches and waits to see where the chips fall in the current policy debate over online privacy. It also awaits the fate of Rick Boucher's bill in Congress, and the FTC's conclusions about Facebook's and Google's business practices regarding privacy.
Much of the online advertising industry hopes to be free to regulate itself, unfettered by a rigid set of rules imposed by the Congress or the FTC.
Facebook's earlier behavior has pushed the advertising and regulatory communities toward a showdown over privacy. After the dust settles and everyone--consumers, lawmakers, Web advertisers, and privacy groups--is heard, perhaps a set of rules will emerge by which Facebook can measure its moves and ambitions going forward. The company's future depends on finding just the right balance between the privacy expectations of its users and the quality of the social marketing data it can serve to its business partners.
UPDATE: Facebook spokesperson Jonny Thaw had this response to the story above: "I want to emphasize that Facebook doesn’t share any personal user information with advertisers. Facebook's ad targeting is done entirely anonymously. If advertisers select demographic targeting for their ads, Facebook automatically matches those ads to the appropriate audience. Advertisers only receive anonymous data reports. So we don’t and have no plans to 'sell or license big chunks of its social graph to large Web marketers.'"

Cisco predicts fourfold traffic increase by 2014

Filed Under: Labels:
Cisco VNI summary – video will drive IP traffic growthThis year’s VNI by Cisco’s service provider marketing group continues to project high IP traffic growth due primarily to video, with only slight variability from last year’s VNI forecast. Worldwide IP traffic for 2009–2014 will grow at a CAGR of 34%, an increase of 4.3x from 2009 levels. Business traffic’s share of total traffic will decline from 21% in 2009 to 13% in 2014, reflecting the “prosumer” trend. VNI has proven to be a useful tool for Cisco to bolster its technology and business vision and roadmap.
The very antithesis of “build it and they will come”: they are coming, but who will build it?

Prior to releasing the Visual Networking Index, Cisco executives hosted their first-ever quarterly business update call with industry analysts to outline Cisco’s strategy and vision for the service provider market. They described a “two-sided” business model based on B2B2C (business to business to consumer) where technology-enabled end users are willing to pay for personalized services that service providers are in a position to provide. But traditional network service providers (NSPs) need to ask where their revenues will come from in two years, and be willing to abandon traditional telco business models and embrace new ones to drive revenue growth. Cisco’s evolving IP NGN vision posits that “the network is the platform” that integrates cloud services, the IP network, and client devices to deliver a unique user experience. Cisco implied that NSPs should partner with OTT players for mutual advantage to profitably meet end-user expectations for personalized services. Cisco’s service provider technology strategy is to supply IP equipment that can not only operate “north to south” (i.e. core to access), but also “east to west” (i.e. data center to data center), supporting a content delivery network (CDN) that caches video content closer to end users and adds network intelligence. These cloud-based content delivery networks can be wholesale business offers that turn OTT players into valued partners, completing the B2B2C value chain. Thus, this is Cisco’s answer to who will pay for IP video traffic growth: the OTT players.

Cloud-based CDNs from network service providers are already emerging; for example, AT&T’s managed cloud for Blizzard Entertainment to meet the stringent performance expectations of gamers playing “World of Warcraft.” While not yet vetted with web-based content providers, the proposal is that they will shift from building their own computing networks to using CDNs based on the NSPs’ managed clouds with Cisco’s infrastructure equipment.

Cisco’s VNI provides the foundation for its network vision and roadmap

Cisco has a history of making the right calls and steering market opinion, both of which are key credentials for gaining customer mindshare. It may not always have the best-of-breed NSP products and is certainly not a price leader, but its market vision and roadmaps are hard to beat. Service providers have long-term expectations for their capex investments, so they value vendors that are good strategists. With an increasingly crowded service provider IP routing market, Cisco hopes its vision will provide a competitive edge. And, as a rising tide raises all ships, Cisco’s IP router competitors (Juniper, Alcatel-Lucent, Huawei, Tellabs, Ericsson, ZTE, etc.) haven’t disputed Cisco’s past VNI forecasts, nor do we expect they will now.

Pc home survey

Filed Under: Labels:
By Paul Trotter
June 7, 2010

LONDON - Former IBM President Thomas Watson was famously quoted as saying there was “a world market for maybe five computers”, but now it seems one in five people has at least that many in their own home.

According to a PC Advisor survey, the majority of households (60%) have three or more computers and only 14% are stuck in the dark ages with just one.
We asked readers to reveal how many desktops or laptops were currently in use in their home, and one in three reported having four or more. Over 20% of PC Advisor’s admittedly tech-savvy audience had five or more PCs at home.

The figures demonstrate the extent to which the home computing revolution has impacted family life, with some PC Advisor forum users revealing that each member of the household now has their own dedicated PC or laptop, while others have family PC or media centre PCs on top. Furthermore, many people have a laptop for working on the move and, in few extreme cases, servers for business use

Google's Wi-Fi Spying??

Filed Under: Labels:

Chip Taylor"Don't be evil" has gone all 1984 on us. Or so it seems after Google revealed Friday that its Street View cars, in addition to snapping photos of the world's roadways, have also been collecting sensitive personal information from unencrypted wireless networks.

It was no secret that Google's cars had already been collecting publicly broadcast SSID information (Wi-Fi network names) and MAC addresses (unique numbers for devices like Wi-Fi routers). But this techie data, which is used for location-based services such as Google Maps, didn't include any "payload data," or personal information sent over the network.

Or so "Big Brother" Google claimed on April 27. But yesterday the search behemoth 'fessed up to a security gaffe of Orwellian proportions. Due to a piece of code written in 2006 by an engineer for an experimental Wi-Fi project, Google had in fact been collecting those private bits after all:

"But it's now clear that we have been mistakenly collecting samples of payload data from open (i.e. non-password-protected) WiFi networks, even though we never used that data in any Google products," wrote Alan Eustace, Google senior VP, engineering & research.

Wow. That's freaky and strange. And not in a good way, either.

Google was smart to open up about the spying incident. An attempted cover-up would have proven disastrous, particularly when numerous consumer and government agencies worldwide have criticized the search company's seemingly insatiable appetite for personal information, a quest that critics say infringes on individual privacy rights.

There's little doubt the Wi-Fi spying incident won't fade away quietly. In fact, the Electronic Frontiers Association (EFA) and Australia Privacy Foundation (APF) have joined forces to question potential security mishaps by Google's Street View, according to a report by Computerworld-Australia.

The latest Street View controversy is sweet fodder for conspiracy theorists. As someone said to me responding to the news: "Imagine, Google driving around in vans, taking pictures of EVERYTHING, and gobbling up Wi-Fi signals like some new-age techno CIA." Sweet conspiracy fodder - indeed.

If nothing else, Google's security gaffe should serve as a wake-up call to clueless folk who've yet to encrypt their home Wi-Fi networks. Do you get it now? Anybody may be snooping on you.

Top 10 Hard Drive Upgrades and Fixes

Filed Under: Labels:
10. Quiet It Down
Over time, the moving parts and powered pieces that move your magnetic disks around at lightning speed will wear, age, and get noisy. In a desktop computer (a Windows PC, generally), you can quiet the drive with rubber shock absorbers or elastic suspension. Toting a laptop? NotebookReview has a good starter guide to cleaning your laptop, which reduces noise, removes dust, lowers temperatures, and gives your drive a bit more life—never a bad thing. (Original posts: Rubber shocks, elastic).

9. Erase It Entirely, the Right Way
There's a huge range of tools that offer spy-agency-level data wiping—some of them are complete overkill. What software actually wipes the slate clean? Jason ran through them and picked out the good stuff, along with the physical, take-no-prisoners means of data destruction, in his advice on how to properly erase your physical media. If you need to pass on or reuse a disk, those apps and boot CDs will get you there. When you just need to make sure your credit card numbers are hidden forever, there's always a hammer. No, seriously. Photo by scragz.

8. Make a Complete Image
Backups keep your data safe, but a complete image of your system on an external drive ensures that everything—applications, data, settings, wallpaper choice, the whole shot—make it back onto your system if things go wrong. Windows users can image their hard drives with DriveImage XML, a great free tool. Another free tool, SuperDuper, makes it easy, if not exactly quick, to mirror your entire Mac onto an external drive.

7. Convert It to an External Drive
Whether it's an old desktop with a surprisingly large drive, or a laptop that's getting an upgrade, you can save that once built-in storage and turn it into an external drive, one you can just plug in with a USB cable and use for backup, media storage, or whatever you need.

6. Visualize Your Usage to Free Up Space
The strangest stuff ends up clogging up your hard drive unnecessarily. Leftover files from CD rips, huge data folders from games, backup files for apps you don't have installed—the list goes on. We've previously shown how to visualize your usage, but we updated with a new look at more simple tools for analyzing and freeing up space on your hard drive. Once you know what's there, and how big it is, you can start toward getting rid of some of it.

5. Recover Files and Rescue Your System
When things go wrong with your hard drive, they usually go really wrong—lost files, no booting, and general panic ensues. Adam's run down recovering deleted files with free software, with a focus on Windows utilities, with a few cross-platform goodies sprinkled in. When you can't get into your system, we heartily recommend a live Ubuntu thumb drive to grab files and fix things up, though a system rescue CD session can work wonders, too. When we put the call out, the answer that came back for the best recovery tool was Recuva, a Windows utility that can save files from hard drives, SD cards, iPods, and much more.

4. Install a Drive Yourself
Tech shops and laptop sellers will charge you a good bit over the parts cost to install a new, likely larger hard drive in a computer. Whether it's a desktop, a MacBook, or an SSD drive, you can likely take an hour and tackle it yourself. Adam explained the desktop hard drive installation, while tech blogger Dwight Silverman has explained a MacBook hard drive upgrade. Each laptop is build differently, but if a solid-state drive is in your future, this tutorial on MacBook installation should give you some general guidance on the job. It's a good skill to have, in general, because as Silverman writes, "Whatever you have now, it's not enough. And when you add more, that won't be enough, either." (Original post: MacBook hard drive).

3. Dual-Boot Windows, Mac, and/or Linux
Just because your computer only came with one operating system doesn't mean it has to stay that way. If you're a Mac owner who'd like a little Windows time now and again, read up on Gina's guide to setting up Boot Camp for Mac and Windows. If Windows 7 looks appealing, and a virtualized XP Mode isn't quite enough oomph, you can still boot Windows 7 with XP or Vista, and just choose your Windows flavor at start-up. And if you're keen on giving Linux a real go, why not dual boot it with Windows 7 in a way that makes it easy on both systems? It's so nice when everybody at the (partition) table just gets along.

2. Upgrade It Without Re-Installing
Maybe you've settled on a spacious new hard drive for your laptop, a solid-state drive for durability, or just need to rescue your stuff before your drive goes. Time to re-install Windows, right? Not so much. Using the Clonezilla Live CD, it's possible to upgrade to a spacious new hard drive without having to completely re-arrange your operating system and applications, and tediously transfer all your media over. It's a step-by-step process, it's fairly straightforward, and you get to trick Windows, somewhat, into believing that nothing ever happened, which can be its own reward.

1. Automatically Back It Up
Don't sell your computer data short—even if your documents don't seem all that important, the time you spent setting installing applications and putting everything in order is definitely worth saving. If you've got a good spare hard drive or an web space you can FTP into, you can set up automatic hard drive backup through Windows. Most folks, though, will want to go with one or both of two routes: online backup, for the entire-house-burns-down security, and/or offline backup, for speedy backups and convenient restoring. The best tools for doing so, when we asked, were Dropbox for online syncing—even though it's not exactly proper backup—and Time Machine for external hard drive backups. For two solutions that make the process mostly painless and care-free, try web-based, automated systems like Mozy or Carbonite. Photo by miss karen.

THE POLITICAL ISSUE (APRIL 2010): THE NEW RANGE ROVER IS WORTH YOUR TAXES

THE POLITICAL ISSUE (APRIL 2010): THE NEW RANGE ROVER IS WORTH YOUR TAXES

The local and national elections are just barely a month away. While the most powerful men and women in the land get busy convincing you that they're out to serve your interest, Top Gear gets busy reminding you not to be gullible. The fruit of that effort is this, our first-ever Political Issue.

On the cover is the 2010 Range Rover, probably the best SUV your congressman can splurge your (yes, your) money on. We count exactly 10 reasons why it is such a perfect vehicle for the typical Filipino politician.

We also report on BMW's new dark-horse model, the X1, as well as the three Italian motorcycle brands from MotoItalia (Piaggio, Vespa and Gilera). Meanwhile, we drive the Volvo XC60 all the way to Alicia, Isabela, to interview car nut and town councilor Ian Dy, who is currently running for vice mayor. (Ian Dy, by the way, is the boyfriend of the actress Heart Evangelista.)

For the Top Read, we tackle the most political issue in the car industry today: the product recall. We discuss what the recall is all about and why it is important not just to car buyers in the US but also to customers around the world. We then chronicle Toyota's recent missteps and the most significant recalls in the automotive industry's history.

For the Big Test, we compare three 4x2 midsize diesel SUVs (Mitsubishi Montero Sport, Isuzu Alterra and Ford Everest) and determine which one makes the best backup vehicle for a politician's convoy. Other Senate-approved vehicles tested are the Lexus LX570, the Mazda CX-7, the Honda CR-V, and the Mercedes-Benz ML350.

Among the personalities featured in this issue are car lovers turned politicos: bodykit designer Andy Cheng, race driver Tyson Sy and car enthusiast Arlene de Guzman. Plus, we have a story on Pinoy car designer Wini Camacho, who's making waves over at Daimler AG as you read this.

I only saw this in a ministop..

Make Money Online by Blogging on Profitable Niche

Filed Under: Labels:
When I was just about to start to make money online by blogging, my target before was to blog on a popular niche. It’s the niche wherein almost everybody were blogging about.

Trivia: A blog niche is the subject or the topic that your blog is focusing or talking about.

For example, when popular bloggers blogged about technology, other bloggers did the same, so I blogged also about technology. When John Chow popularized the Make Money Online niche, lots of bloggers followed him, so I did the same.

Wait… I want to make it clear first that I started making money online by blogging after realizing that I could really earn money through my blogs.

If you’re following me on this blog for a long time already, maybe you’ll get confused when I say that “my target was to blog on a popular niche” because you’ve learned already from my old blogposts that I started blogging without thinking of making money online but only to enhance my English writing skills.

In other words, I was already blogging for a period of time before I started to make money online by blogging.

OKay… So what I did on my early days of making money online by blogging were:

searched or tried to identify the popular niche.
customized my blog to that niche,
published blogposts related to that niche,
tried to find and drive traffic into the blog,
and then make money from the traffic that the blog got by displaying ads on that blog.
Did I really earned money at home through the internet by just blogging at the said blog?

Yes! And actually, up to this time, I am still earning money from the ads displayed on that blog even if I am not frequently posting posts on that blog… even if I am only sleeping the whole day here in my apartment with my son CJ… even if I am only playing Facebook’s Cafe World… Even if I am just driving the tricycle that the blog bought me… Even if I am just riding the Honda XRM motorcycle, a blogging juice… Even if I am not doing anything [money still comes in].

For the sake of those who don’t know what kind of income is this, economic experts called this as “Passive Income” or “residual income“.

Trivia: Passive Income or residual income is the money you earned even if you are not doing anything. In my case, I only created a blog, did things just to drive regular traffic into it, and displayed ads. Now, since the traffic is regular, then the income also comes in regularly even if I am already doing nothing.

However, this passive income is just small if compared to the passive income earned by a blog focused on a very profitable niche.

You might ask: Isn’t the profitable niche a popular niche?

Okay… The truth is: A niche can be both popular and profitable. But not all popular niches are profitable.

For example, the Pinay Scandal topic. There are lots of keywords used to search the internet for the Pinay Scandal materials. However, the “Pinay Scandal” keywords alone has generated 33,100 local searches this December 2009 and 246,000 global searches a month [according to Google's search data]. The figures clearly tell us that Pinay Scandal topic is popular.

Trivia: The popularity of a niche can be measured in two ways: (1) by the number of searches made every month; (2) by the number of competing blogs or websites under that certain niche.

But is it profitable? Well, if you are planning to sell pornographic materials and products on the blog that talks about Pinay Scandal, then I think it is profitable. However, if you want to sell useful and educational products, then it is not profitable especially if you are displaying Adsense ads on your blog.

Remember that Google Adsense displays nothing (no ads) on adult-related webpages because in the first place, you are not allowed to place adsense codes to webpages with adult content. So, you’ll not be earning decent money from Adsense if your blog focuses on this kind of niche.

However, if your blog is focused on a very profitable niche, you’ll not just earn huge money from Adsense but from your direct advertisers as well and from the products you promoted.
